Jump Start and Flat Battery Help in London
What to do first if your car will not start
If your car will not start, do not keep turning the key again and again. Repeated attempts drain a weak battery fast, and can leave you with even less to work with.
First, check that you are safe. If you are in a live lane, or anyone is hurt, call 999 first. Do not work on the car in moving traffic.
If you are in a safe place, switch off lights, heater and radio before you try again, so the battery is not loaded by everything at once. Try once, then wait.
If the car clicks, turns over slowly, or the lights are dim, a flat battery is a likely cause. Our flat battery guide explains the signs and the safety steps in full: Flat Battery? What to Do If Your Car Won’t Start in the UK.
What jump start help is
Jump start help is help to start a car with a flat battery, using jump leads and another power source, done safely. It is one of our main services, along with recovery and cab, car towing, and cab and transportation.
Jump start help is for starting the car. It is not battery replacement, and we do not offer battery replacement. If the battery will not hold a charge, or the car still will not start after a jump start, the answer is recovery, not another attempt at the roadside.
Signs it may be the battery
A flat battery often gives itself away before it fails completely. Look out for:
- The car is slow to start, especially on cold mornings.
- You hear a clicking sound when you turn the key, and the engine does not turn over.
- The engine turns over slowly, rather than briskly.
- The lights are dim, or the dashboard lights fade when you try to start the car.
Any one of these can have another cause, so do not assume it is the battery. Tell us what you hear and see when you call, and we will talk through the next step.
When not to jump start
Do not jump start in these cases:
- The battery is damaged, cracked, leaking, or swollen.
- The battery is frozen.
- The car is in a live lane, on a motorway, or in a place where working beside it is not safe.
- You are not sure how to do it safely, or the leads, terminals or cables look damaged.
If any of that applies, do not attempt it. Get to a safe place, call 999 first if you are in a live lane or anyone is hurt, then call us for recovery. A jump start that is not safe is not worth the risk.
When recovery is needed instead
Recovery is needed instead of a jump start when:
- A jump start has not worked.
- A jump start is not safe for that battery or that location.
- The car starts, then cuts out again, or will not keep running.
- The car has another fault as well, such as a loss of power, steering or brakes, or visible damage.
- You are on a motorway or in a live lane, where no roadside repair should be attempted.
In those cases, our core service applies: Car Breakdown Recovery in London. Recovery gets the car off the road safely, rather than leaving you to try again beside traffic.
What to tell us when you call
When you call or WhatsApp +44 7588 282876, tell us:
- Where you are, as clearly as you can.
- What vehicle you have.
- What happens when you try to start it. Does it click, turn slowly, or do nothing at all? Are the lights dim?
- Whether the battery looks damaged, leaking or frozen, if you can see it safely without working beside traffic.
You do not need to know whether the battery, the starter, or something else is at fault. Describe what the car does, and we will talk through whether jump start help or recovery is the right call.

Frequently asked questions
My car clicks when I turn the key. Is that the battery?
It is a common sign of a flat battery, but it is not proof. Tell us what you hear, and whether the lights are dim, and we will talk through whether jump start help or recovery is right.
Should I keep trying to start the car?
No. Try once, then wait. Repeated cranking drains a weak battery fast.
Do you replace batteries?
No. We offer jump start help only, not battery replacement. If the battery will not hold a charge, recovery is the next step.
Is it safe to jump start on a motorway?
No. Do not attempt any repair on a motorway or in a live lane. Call 999 first if you are in a live lane, then call us for recovery.
What if the battery is frozen or leaking?
Do not jump start it. Get to a safe place and call us for recovery.
